Read on to find out more about choosing a Nikon Coolpix L20

I’ve always been a fan of the old school way of doing things. I still refuse to Nikon Coolpix L20prepare my coffee any other way than with my hand-crank grinder right at brewing time—none of those pre-timed coffee makers that let your coffee go stale overnight. I’m not old and bitter, I just like the feel of the tried and true formula.

The same has been true about my photography.  I may not be a professional, but I’ve Nikon Coolpix L20been hung up on my standard-format cameras ever since I learned to shoot.

But a couple of weeks ago, my old film camera gave up the ghost, and it came time to buy a new one. A few friends of mine, including the more avid photographers I know, started pushing me into the digital age.

 Making the Switch

I came to find out that, despite the nobility I once felt in my purist ways, that most of my trepidations regarding digital cameras have been silenced by advances in technology. And it’s not just the expensive cameras that are narrowing the gap of film’s advantages, either. Higher detail levels, zoom features, face detection, high speed shutters that stabilize and minimize blur—it’s becoming hard to deny the advantages of having a digital camera.

And while prints have been available for digital cameras for several years now, the quality of a digital photograph has finally reached the point where the untrained eye cannot distinguish it from a film camera.

The Nikon Coolpix L20 digital camera really caught my eye. It had all the features I look for in a camera, and even had some new tricks up its sleeve that I didn’t know digital cameras were capable of. Sitting at 10 megapixels, it was plenty comparable to any standard-format camera in terms of picture quality. Also, it automatically focuses on faces, recognize when the main subject is smiling, and actually take the picture at that critical moment, taking the guesswork out of hitting that little button. It can even warn you when your subject blinks.

Also, it can save you quite a bit of editing in Photoshop as well. The camera automatically fixes redeye if you want, and also brightens dark or backlit images. It also automatically detects what kind of setting you’re in and sets the light detection mode accordingly. This camera does it all.

It also detects motion and adjusts speed settings accordingly, to prevent blurry pictures from happening. There is a 3.6x zoom, and a bright, detailed display on which to view the pictures. I can definitely say with some confidence that the Nikon Coolpix L20 is going to be a part of my picture-taking arsenal for a long time to come—especially considering the money I’ll be saving by not having to print pictures I don’t like, or by never having to buy film again. And the price is right on this one—retailing at $120, it’s definitely in inexpensive but powerful replacement for my old camera.

Did I mention it captures movies with sound? That was an afterthought for me, I wasn’t even looking for video, but now I’ve got it.

Nikon Coolpix L20Looks like we definitely have a keeper.
